Our calendar system originates in Kemet.

The earliest Egyptians measured time by the moon; for the month, the interval between two new moons was the unit of time measurement. The moon-month varies in length from 29 to 30, and the lunar calendar is cumbersome and inaccurate. The Egyptians met this difficulty by devising an accurate calendar.

They noticed that the dog star, Sirius, rose heliacally (before sunrise) on July 19^th, at the beginning of the inundation (the annual overflow of the Nile). This gave them an improved 365 day calendar.

The 12 months of the Egyptian year were uniformly of 30 days each, giving a total of 360 days, so 5 feast days were added at the end of the year…Each 30-day month was divided into 3 weeks of 10 days each; and there were 3 seasons of the year: the Inundation, the Cultivation, and the Harvest, each consisting of 4 months.

The Egyptian astronomers soon discovered that the true length of the year was 365.5 days, hence the calendar could have been improved by adding an extra day every four years, but this was not done. Ptolemy Euergetes issues a decree in 238 BCE in which is was commanded that every fourth year should be 366 days, but the Egyptians were opposed to this and ignored it. This calendar, established in Kemet over 6,000 years ago, has descended the stream of history to us.

The ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol of the heart is a heart shaped vase.

According to Muata Ashby:

The vase is a container which may be used for water, beer, wine, milk, etc. Likewise, the human heart is seen as a vessel which contains thoughts, feelings, desires, and unconscious memories. In mystical terms, the heart is a metaphor of the human mind including conscious, subconscious and unconscious levels.

The mind is the resevoir of all of your ideas, convictions, and feelings. Therefore, just as these factors direct the path of your life, so too they are the elements which are judged in the Hall of Maati by the two goddesses, Isis and Nephthys, along with Osiris.

The heart then is the sum total of your experienes, actions and aspirations, your conscience or karma, and these are judged in the balance against the feather of Ma’at.

(AP) NEW YORK — Weapons from China, Russia and Belarus are fueling the nine-year-old conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region, Amnesty International said in a report late Wednesday.

The human rights group said arms manufactured and supplied from the three countries — “or evidence of their use” — have been found in Darfur and other conflict areas including South Kordofan near the border with newly independent South Sudan.

The report documents how China, Russia and Belarus continue to supply weapons and munitions to Sudan despite what Amnesty said is “compelling evidence that the arms will be used against civilians in Darfur.”

It said exports include significant quantities of ammunition, helicopter gunships, attack aircrafts, air-to-ground rockets and armored vehicles.

Amnesty said the report highlights the urgent need for effective controls by the United Nations over the flow of arms.

The 29-page report was released a week before the U.N. Security Council considers existing sanctions against Sudan. U.N. member states are also to resume talks next week on an arms trade treaty.

Countries are allowed to sell arms and ammunition to the Sudanese government, but states are required to provide “end user” certificates guaranteeing the material will not be transferred to Darfur, which is subject to a U.N. arms embargo.

Amnesty International said evidence collected in recent years “unambiguously indicates” that with regard to Darfur, the Sudanese government fails to fully comply with the guarantees and commitments required by exporting countries when licensing arms transfers.

The Darfur conflict began in February 2003 when ethnic African rebels took up arms against the Arab-dominated Sudanese government in Khartoum, claiming discrimination and neglect. Khartoum is accused of retaliating by arming local nomadic Arab tribes and unleashing militias on civilian populations — a charge the government denies.

U.N. officials say at least 300,000 people have lost their lives from violence, disease and displacement, and 2.7 million have been driven from their homes.

Amnesty International urged countries supplying arms to suspend all transfers to the Sudanese government to stop further shipments to Darfur. It urged the Security Council to immediately expand the current arms embargo to all of Sudan “in order to stop military and related supplies reaching all parties to the conflict in Darfur.”

The Rosetta Stone is the first template for translating the Kemetic language, the “hieroglyphics”, or metu neter as the Ancient Egyptians called it.

The Rosetta Stone is a stone with writing on it in two languages (Egyptian and Greek), using three scripts (hieroglyphic, demotic and Greek). It was written in 196 BCE, discovered in 1799, and translated in 1822 by Jean-François Champollion.

The Rosetta Stone is written in three scripts because when it was written, there were three scripts being used in Egypt. The Rosetta Stone was written in all three scripts so that the priests, government officials and rulers of Egypt could read what it said.

The first was hieroglyphic which was the script used for important or religious documents. The second was demotic which was the common script of Egypt. The third was Greek which was the language of the rulers of Egypt at that time.

Black History Month fact #10

The Shabaka Stone is one of the most important relics to be discovered from Kemet, next to the Rosetta Stone.

It is named after the “black” Pharaoh Shabaka (ca.712- 698 BCE), who ruled in the XXVth Dynasty (ca. 716 - 702 BCE) and who’s Old Kingdom styled prenomen name (“Neferkare”) is mentioned twice (in LINE 1). The black African Nubian Shabaka was the first king of the “Ethiopian” Dynasty to reunite Kemet by defeating the monarchy of Sais while settling in Memphis. Memphis was the ancient capital of Kemet, founded by Pharoah Menes.

The Shabaka Stone lays the foundation for the Memphite Theology, which was the foundational spiritual teaching of Kemet presented by Pharaoh Menes. It centers Ptah as the creator of the universe:

This it is said of Ptah: “He who made all and created the gods”. And he is Ta-tenen, who gave birth to the gods, and from whom every thing came forth, foods, provisions, divine offerings, all good things.

This it is recognized and understood that he is the mightiest of the gods. Thus Ptah was satisfied after he had made all things and all divine words.

Today, locs have become a Rastafarian symbol. However, locs date back thousands of years in Ancient Africa.

Locs were originally worn in Kemet. It is not worn as a style but rather has a profound spiritual significance. Ancient Egyptians wore them, ancient Asian emperor’s wore them, cavemen wore them, even John the Baptist and Samson wore them.  The first writing we have about dreadlocks is in the Veda scriptures of India, the earliest piece is dated to 1800 BC. But many peoples and tribes have worn dreadlocks the Germanic tribes, the Greeks,Samson and other Nazorites, John the Baptist, the Pacific peoples, and the Naga Indians also wore dreadlocks. Bahatowie priests of the Ethiopian Coptic Church had been locking their hair since the fifth century.

King Tut himself had dreadlocks, and they are still intact to this day. The Mau Mau tribe wore dreadlocks to intimidate the colonizers of Kenya in east Africa. Even Caesar claimed that the Celts wore dreadlocks by describing them as having “hair like snakes”. 

The actual word dreadlocks comes from Jamaica, made up by British imperialists in the early movement of the Rastamen. Dreadlocks came from the word dread for the meaning of fear and horror because the British imperialists thought that locs were ugly. Locks are now worn in India by Sadhus (holy men), the Somali, the Galla, the Maasai, the Mau Mau, the Kau, the Ashanti, the Fulani, the Aborigines, the New Guineans, and many others.

Much of what today is studied as African history is the protégé of the racist ideology that viewed the black man as a little above an ape in terms of human intelligence. The earliest times of anthropological sojourn in sub-Saharan Africa coincided with the rise of pervasive racism in Great Britain. The early Victorian science which was birthed at this period was preoccupied with determining human intelligence through a study of “cranial capacity and comparative head shapes.” The publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species which explained the evolutionary process of human development, using such terms as “natural selection” and “ascent from lower species” lent credence to the argument of the racial superiority of the Caucasian.

Several reports of positive achievements from Africa, filed by scholars in the field was regarded as not worth the while; it did not conform with the stereotypical racist views held by the Europeans about Africans. Robert Felkin, famed medical missionary in East Africa in the later part of the 19^th century, recorded a successful Caesarean section he witnessed, as it was being carried out by the natives of Kahura in Uganda in 1879. According to Felkin’s accounts, Banana wine served as both anesthetic and disinfectant,  while a hot red iron was used to check bleeding. An incision was skillfully made by the native surgeon in the mid section, and the baby was brought out alive, while the wound was closed with some herbal leaves and thin sharpened iron nails. The patient did not utter a sigh of pain during the course of the surgery. Felkin stayed back to observe her heal, and in a space of eleven days she was able to commence the breastfeeding of her baby, shortly after the pins were removed. American anthropologists Erwin Ackerknecht, reporting  Felkin’s observations in the article “Primitive Surgery,” delivered as a paper in 1946, noted; “unfortunately, I feel unable to explain why in 1879 there existed in Kahura in Uganda, a black surgeon performing the Caesarean section safely and, in some respects, better than many of his contemporary white colleagues.” Ackerknecht’s statement shows the contempt to which the black man’s intelligence is held.  This version of authentic African history never found its way into the history or medical science curriculum provided by the colonial masters to the African pupils and students.

The Greek alphabet, the script of English today, is based on the Kemetic alphabet of Ancient Egypt/Kemet and the Upper Nile Valley of Ancient Africa. Ancient Egyptians called their words MDW NTR, or ‘Metu Neter,” which means divine speech. The Greeks called the language of Ancient Egyptians ‘hieroglyphics’ which is a Greek word. The etymology of hieroglyphics is sacred (hieros) carvings (glyph). According to Muata Ashby,

“The mouth is a symbol of consciousness…thoughts are conditioning instruments. This means that when you think, you are actually differentiating. When the mind goes beyond words, it goes beyond thoughts and thereby experiences undifferented consciousness.

Speaking is an art to be performed when it will do the most good and not for idle talk or for showing off to others or those who do not wish to listen.

The original name of Egypt is Kemet (KMT). Egypt is a Greek word derived from “Aigyptos,” which is derived from “Hwt-ka-Ptah.” The ancient Egyptians called their country Hwt-ka-Ptah, which means the House of the ka(divine creative power, one’s conscience*) of Ptah. Ptah, to the Ancient Egyptians, was the creator of the universe. Kemet (KMT) means “black land,” referring to the dark soils of the Nile River Valley.

Archaeologists working in Egypt have discovered the tomb of a female singer in the Valley of the Kings.

The tomb was found by a team from the University of Basel in Switzerland who came across it by chance.

The woman, Nehmes Bastet, was a temple singer during Egypt’s 22nd Dynasty (approximately 945 - 712BC), according to an inscription in the tomb.

The coffin found in the tomb contains an intact mummy from almost 3,000 years ago.

Professor Susanne Bickel of the University of Basel told the BBC that the coffin was opened on Monday and she was able to see the “nicely wrapped” mummy of the woman who was buried in the tomb.

The opening of the coffin was carried out by Prof Bickel and her Basel colleague, field director Elina Paulin-Grothe, together with the Chief Inspector of Antiquities of Upper Egypt, Dr Mohammed el-Bialy and inspector Ali Reda.

Prof Bickel said that the upper edge of the tomb was found on the first day of Egypt’s revolution, on 25 January 2011. The opening was sealed with an iron cover and the discovery was kept quiet.

Last week, after the start of this year’s field season, the feature was identified as a tomb - and one of the very few tombs in the Valley of the Kings which have not been looted.

‘Painted black’

Elina Paulin-Grothe said that the tomb was not built for the female singer, but was re-used for her 400 years after the original burial, according to AP.

There are other non-royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, Prof Bickel said, which mostly date from the 18th Dynasty (1500 - 1400BC).

The woman in the coffin was the daughter of the high priest of Amon, Egypt’s Antiquities Minister Mohammed Ibrahim told AFP.

The discovery was important because “it shows that the Valley of the Kings was also used for the burial of ordinary individuals and priests of the 22nd Dynasty”, he added.

Egyptian news site Ahram reports that the wooden sarcophagus was painted black and decorated with hieroglyphic texts.

This tomb is only the second found in the Valley of the Kings since the discovery of Tutankhamun in 1922, and is referred to as KV64 in the naming system used to label tombs in the valley. It is one of a cluster of tombs without any wall decoration found near the royal tomb of Thutmoses III.

A tomb found in 2006, known as KV63, had seven coffins in it but none of them contained any mummies - it seems to have been used as a burial cache.

The Melanesians

Humans have been leaving Africa and colonizing the rest of the world repeatedly from the beginning of time. In the words of Richard Dawkins ‘We are all African’.
Vestiges, of Early people to Migrate from Africa can be found in all over the world with that I present the Melanesians.

The Melanesians are an ethnic group in Melanesia. The original inhabitants of the group of islands now named Melanesia were likely the ancestors of the present-day Papuan-speaking people.

Predominantly Melanesian areas include the Mollucas of Eastern Indonesia, the New Guinea and surrounding islands, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

While all humans, (who are descendants of people who left Africa in multiple waves)  outside of Africa are now known to have inherited some genes from Neanderthals, Melanesians are the only known modern humans whose prehistoric ancestors mixed with the Denisova hominin, sharing 4%–6% of their genome with this ancient cousin of the Neanderthal.  

Blonde hair is exceptionally rare among those without European heritage, however Melanesians of some islands are one of the few non-European peoples and the only dark-skin group of humans known to have blonde hair.

I wonder how the Melanesian define themselves I met a Melanesian chief  not to long ago, who looked quite similar to me. Very fascinating.

Threats from a radical Islamist group piled pressure on Nigeria’s beleaguered government, which warned that the country risked sliding into anarchy as popular protests over cuts to fuel subsidies that have strangled Africa’s top oil economy entered a third day.

Abubakar Shekau, leader of the Boko Haram Islamist movement, waded into the growing unrest in Nigeria in his first ever televised appearance on Wednesday. Sitting between two Kalashnikov rifles and wearing a bullet-proof vest, he challenged security forces to defeat the organisation, whose campaign to impose strict Islamic sharia law across Nigeria killed some 500 people last year.

A day after gunmen from the group killed eight people in the rural northern state of Yobe, and a mosque and Islamic school were burnt in the south, Nobel prize-winning author Wole Soyinka warned that the increasing sectarian tensions resembled the build up to civil conflict in 1967. A million people died in the Biafra war when Igbo ethnics tried to secede from Nigeria.

The northern-based group, whose name means “non-Islamic education is sacrilege,” stepped up a low-level insurgency after its leader was killed in government custody two years ago. It has since broadened its campaign, threatening to fracture Africa’s most populous country along sectarian lines. A spree of church bombings since December has killed around 60 people and sparked retaliatory attacks from Christians, who are the majority in the south. Threats by Boko Haram, which the US government says has international ambitions, have prompted Christians who live, work and marry in the country’s Muslim-dominated north to flee southwards.

“They killed our brothers and ate their flesh in Jos,” Shekau said in a video posted on YouTube, referring to claims last year of Christian youths burning and eating Muslims during periodic clashes in the state of Plateau, a melting pot of religious and ethnic tensions. “We are also at war with Christians,” he said.

Day 6 of Kwanzaa: “KUUMBA” is the 6th principle. It means creativity. Let us think about what we can do to leave our community more beneficial and beautiful than we inherited it. It  occurs on New Years Eve & is a special day. This is the day of the Kwanzaa Karamu or Kwanzaa Feast. In the spirit of celebration many families invite their friends and family to join in the festivities. 

 On this special day we remember our ancestors when the Unity cup is shared. After everyone has taken a drink the candles are extinguished. 

But before the Karamu is over, the eldest member of those present will read the Tamshi La Tutaonana (TAM-shi la Tu-ta-u-NA-na). The Tamshi La Tutaonana was written by Dr. Karenga, the creator of Kwanzaa, as a farewell statement to the feast and the year. 

Everyone stands as the elder reads: 

Strive for discipline, dedication, and achievement in all you do.

“I was at this show and @ the time i was Djing for SOL UPRISING(Lil Sci and Stacy Epps) and we were the opening act for the MADVILLAIN/JAYLIB Party so we walk in and Doom(wit no Mask) walks up greets us (i knew who he was im a KMD fan SON!)……So we walk out to the floor and who do i see on the other side of the floor…. DILLA walking around reading something….walk 2 the back stage and PB Wolf is setting up on stage run into J.Rocc and as i always ask J.Rocc (even when i see him now) “Where We Smoke @ ?” As im sound checking Madlib walks up and dap exchanged. Then i head to the “produce section”! Go out to open up the show and im playing Ta`Raach Inst`s and then curtains open up @ that point thats the most people i ever seen…So im lightweight trippin……we rock do the thang all is dope!……nights just starting and Egon,J.Rocc,PBW drop dj sets. During PBW`s set i went 2 the backstage 2 smoke one “U know _G” and only people i can remember running into was Havana Joe,B+, Coleman, Rhettmatic, and Sci…… Then as im going up the stairs 2 see the show cause Madlib`s about 2 hit the stage i see DILLA standing there @ the top of the steps i gave him dap and walked out 2 the side of the stage where everybody was congregating and i could tell Dilla was kinda nervous and so  Madlib and J.Rocc is doing the thang killing it as u see and when it was time for Dilla 2 join Madlib seems like we all levitated or some shit it was HYPE!!!! HYPE!!!! HYPE!!!! HYPE!!!!!! I remember looking 2 my left side and seeing DOOM mask off sipping a Heinken wit the gold fronts on blast smiling hard and then Kareem Riggins and Common pop`d up and it seems like as soon as Common walked in he went straight 2 the stage….So after the Jaylib set…. DOOM goes on 2 tall henikens in hand and was his own dj (cdj status) kills it!!  does Operation Doomsday classics then into Madvillain wit Madlib on back up vocals and Madlib even does a drum solo and Daedelus pops up on stage playing a accordian during of course “ACCORDIAN”  WHAT A NIGHT!!!! and the funniest part after such a dope show was 2  see Doom escape maskless walking amidst fans in the parking lot and them NOT KNOWING hahaha”  _Ras_G

Diego Rivera isn’t the only artist who is having a birthday today.

Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) was a Cuban artist of mixed Chinese, African and Spanish ancestry whose work was deeply influenced by Afro-Cuban culture.

He grew up in a thriving Afro-Cuban community in the island’s central Villa Clara province before traveling to Havana to study law, which he quickly abandoned before turning to art. Lam went to Europe to study painting in Spain, eventually making his way to Paris, where he met Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Georges Braque, André Breton, and Claude Lévi-Strauss. He returned to Cuba at the outbreak of the second World War, and spent time in Haiti in the 1940s. It was then that his art began to incorporate the styles he had encountered in Europe with the Afro-Cuban iconography of his homeland. Lam eventually returned to Europe in the 1950s and died in Paris at age 80.

After Makerere University unveiled its locally assembled electric car, the Kiira EV, another group of Ugandans continues with yet another innovative venture- that of assembling the country’s first aircraft. The group that started out a year ago has now progressed and is in the final stages of putting up the aero-plane.

Standing in the yard of his mother’s home in a suburb of the Ugandan capital, Chris Nsamba maps out his dream — within the next ten years, the space enthusiast wants to launch one of his countrymen into orbit.

Nsamba, founder of the African Space Research Program, outlined his plans to Agence France-Presse as he showed off the African Skyhawk, an aircraft built by his team of volunteer engineers to test their skills before they begin work on a shuttle. Nsamba is well aware of the skepticism with which many will greet his plans, but it does not seem to affect him. At one time or another, he says, every successful scientist has been called a madman.

African observers of the Universe and the Sirius question.

The complex knowledge knowledge of the Dogon of Mali about the Sirius (the brightest star in the night sky) star-system sent shock-waves around the scientific world. These west African people did not only plot the orbits of stars circling sirius but revealed the extraordinary nature of one of its companions - Sirius B - which they claimed to be one of the densest and tinniest of the stars in our galaxy. What is most astonishing about their revelations is that Sirius B is invisible to the unaided eye.

It wasn’t until the 20th century, of course, that Western astronomers finally proved the existence of Sirius B, which they found to be a white dwarf, smaller and heavier than Sirius as the Dogon had stated, and whose elliptical orbit caused the larger star to ‘wobble’.

Eurocentric scientists have attributed this knowledge to the presence of space-men (Robert Tempels), Jesuit priest (Kenneth Brecher) and european travelers among these, Africans, who, according to Brecher, “have no business knowing this”.

Hunter Adams III of the Argonne National Laboratory exposes the superficiality and racial arrogance of these claims. He points to the 700 year old antiquity of Sirius traditions among the Dogon aspects of which were shared by other black peoples.

The Hogon is the spiritual leader of the village. He is elected between the oldest men of the enlarged families of the village. After his election he has to follow a six-month initiation period, during which he is not allowed to shave or wash. He wears white clothes and nobody is allowed to touch him. A young virgin that has not yet had her period takes care of him, cleans the house and prepares his meals. She returns to her home at night.

After his initiation, he will wear a red fez. He has an armband with a sacred pearl that symbolises his function. The virgin is replaced by one of his wives, but she also returns to her home at night. The Hogon has to live alone in his house. The Dogon believe the sacred snake Lébé comes during the night to clean him and to transfer wisdom.

Enslaved people captured from the Congo aboard an Arab slave ship intercepted by the Royal Navy (Dutch HMS Daphne).

Most European naval powers agreed to end the slave trade early in the 19th century, but illegal commerce continued. Photography did not exist during the heyday of the slave trade but was available when a British Navy officer on a ship intercepting slavers in 1868 took this picture. Shipboard conditions look much like the graphic depictions in earlier accounts. As in the past, children and those not thought dangerous were allowed on deck. Others were kept in the hold.

This photograph reveals a very little of the terrible suffering caused to millions of people by the slave trade. This group of severely emaciated boys and young men on the lower deck of a Royal Naval ship apparently have been taken from what was a slave vessel trading illegally off the African coast headed to the Americas. The captain of the Royal Naval ship had instructions not to return the rescued slaves to the place on the coast where they had been put on the slave ship (presumably because they were in danger of being recaptured by traders); it is not clear from the available documentation what happened to them afterwards.
